PHNOM PENH, October 18, 2024 — Three Cambodian athletes are set to compete in a Kun Khmer competition in Liverpool, United Kingdom, on the evening of December 21, marking a significant milestone in promoting Khmer martial arts on the global stage.
During a press conference in Phnom Penh on December 17, Khov Chhay, President of the Kun Khmer Federation, expressed his pride in this achievement, stating that this event will further solidify Kun Khmer’s place in the international arena. “This will create a new chapter in showcasing the values and history of Khmer martial arts to the world,” he noted.
This competition marks the second time Kun Khmer will feature in the UK, reflecting the growing recognition of the sport globally. Looking ahead, the federation plans for Cambodian athletes to compete in France, Spain, and other countries in early 2025. Kun Khmer has already gained exposure in nations such as China, Korea, Japan, France, and Australia.
According to Kun Khmer promoter and head of the delegation, Sreu Sreng, the Cambodian athletes traveling to the UK include Hong Sovann Chansothy (61kg category), Thun Sihong (57kg category), and Som Vichhay (63.5kg category). They will face British competitors in their respective weight classes.
This event serves as an important step in promoting Cambodia's cultural heritage and strengthening the global profile of Kun Khmer, a martial art deeply rooted in the nation’s identity.
